There is a unique experience of being able to fully immerse myself in music that, although is familiar, suddenly sounds new, fresh, and immediate. With this work I have found myself falling into albums I love. This is a quantum leap in technology – I have so far had the pleasure of mixing some of the greatest artists in history in Dolby Atmos. From the feeling of hearing your favorite artist in the same room as you, to the experience of sitting directly in the middle of a symphony orchestra, the listening experience is transformative and the possibilities for the creator are endless. Now with the dawn of immersive audio, we can take the music lover inside the music. And as we progress further into the streaming era, it feels like the option to enjoy music at higher quality should be there for those who want it.Grammy Award-winning producer, songwriter, and composer Giles Martin said: “Since recording began, artists, producers, and engineers have tried to paint pictures with sound, transporting listeners to worlds they never knew existed, even when the sound came from a single speaker. There’s a significant ecosystem of speaker hardware that’s compatible with Spotify Connect, making it easier and more convenient to enjoy the extra fidelity. Personally, I still hope Spotify HiFi does eventually launch. Spotify has yet to confirm whether it too will offer Atmos tracks - or even hi-res audio that exceeds 16-bit/44.1kHz. Even then, some people just can’t distinguish it from the standard, lossy quality they’ve been listening to for years.

In a world of Bluetooth headphones and earbuds, Apple and Amazon are far more interested in hyping spatial Dolby Atmos audio than higher-bitrate streams that only shine on expensive gear. Lossless music is fundamentally a niche feature that’s at odds with how music is often consumed these days. Apple’s decision to bring it (and hi-res audio) to the masses not only forced its streaming service competitors to switch up their pricing. But on the same day that Apple announced its plans for lossless streaming, Amazon said it would ditch the higher subscription price and include HD quality as part of the regular premium plan. Although Dolby Atmos Music was already available to subscribers of Tidal and Amazon 's premium tiers (alongside Sony's competing 360 Reality Audio format), it hadn't garnered that much attention. Before that shift, services like Amazon Music Unlimited and Tidal had been demanding an added premium for the feature. Apple Music rolled out lossless and hi-res playback in June, offering the improved audio quality at no extra charge.
